A comprehensive concept plan has been developed for a meaningful memorial garden at Pukekohe Cemetery, dedicated to honouring approximately 200 individuals buried in unmarked graves. The design, created by Kohae (led by Alistair Toto and his team), draws on strong connections to Ngaati Tamaoho and local Pukekohe whaanau. The project has received full support from the local cemetery committee and the Franklin Local Board.

Community members are now warmly invited to review the plans and share their insights.

Why does this matter?

The presence of unmarked graves signifies profound grief and loss within the community. This memorial aims to protect the waahi tapu (sacred site) and establish a tranquil sanctuary where whaanau (family) and the broader community can gather to remember loved ones, reflect, and find emotional healing.
